The Paducah CollectionSpecial Delivery Issues with Varieties (NH)
Owner's Comments: I have a great fondness for US Special Delivery stamps. I've often seen these stamps at work within the pages of my mother's diaries. My mother, born in 1922, started keeping a daily diary at a very young age. Many times I've seen a diary entry mentioning a Special Delivery letter had arrived from one of our family saying something like I'll be arriving in Paducah on the train from Lexington at a certain time/date. There are also several diary entries recording my mom or her parents sending a Special Delivery letter to someone. It's interesting to me this all happened back when the US Postal Service in Paducah delivered mail to your house on both morning and afternoon routes. Life in the USA was very different in those days. It seems USPS Special Delivery mail was probably more reliable and less expensive than making a long distance telephone call. As David Hall has noted, these stamps are big and beautiful. Their changes in design provide a perfect synopsis documenting the evolution of transportation in the USA mail delivery system. Special Delivery was the Express Mail/FedEx of late 19th century/20th century America. |
